The Blackout Club is a first person coop horror game centering around a group of teenagers that seek to uncover the mystery of what is happening in their remote town of Redacre. The game features a live theater component in which various voices of influence would communicate with players, revealing an overarching meta story for the community to engage in. It was released in 2019 on PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4.

SUMMARY

Working on the Blackout Club started primarily with addressing the high volume of custom props needed for player expression and to tell the daimon's stories. As various missions and areas were introduced it expanded into more layout and tech art work to make sure each piece fit the narrative and gameplay goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Player Tools - Modeled and textured all the player tools in the game, such as the configurable drone, grappling hook, firecrackers and more. Created all the associated resupply system by which players could "buy" more resources using the in game snack currency.

  • Daimon Cult Assets - Concepted and created most of the masks and other decorative daimon props that players could wear or place in their hideouts.

  • Maze Instruments and Machines - Concepted and modeled the instruments and machines used to define the maze spaces.

  • Environment Decoration - Decorated the homes on Hoadly so each house was an expression of the named characters that lived there, down to matching photos for each character.

  • Mission Props - Worked with the designers to come up with unique and engaging mission props, such as the singing head that would sing loudly when carried too fast, or the signal relay nodes that would create a laser path from source to destination.

  • Old Growth Daycare - Created and decorated the daycare, complete with secret access to the maze and indoctrination themes throughout. It has a nice playground though.

  • In Between - Concepted and designed the place In Between that players would reach to commune with the voices for various rewards. A surreal contrast to small town suburbia, it is an island floating in the clouds lit by the dwindling light of the sun during an eclipse.
